Occupational Therapy

Practical… real life… independence

For Children Aged 0 – 18

Paediatric Occupational Therapy helps children to overcome the physical, social and emotional challenges they encounter as part of their daily lives.

Our attitude is always supportive as we work with our children of all ages and their families to achieve their dreams.

Nature Therapy

Just the thought of being out in nature has us breathing easier, relaxing our bodies and yearning for some time out there in a place less ordered.

The outside world inspires us, grounds us, allows us to come into sync with ourselves and each other… with a slower pace. Somehow, there is healing and renewal when we make the time to be in nature.

Nature therapy can mean many things and it may vary between sessions. At The Whole Child nature therapy might include:

  • NBeing outside in nature during our sessions
  • NPlaying with items from nature (stones, pieces of wood, wooden toys)
  • NTaking some moments to look out the window, watch butterflies and birds, or read books about nature
  • NMaking a plan for nature connection & nature experience to happen more regularly for a family
  • NUse of essential oils to bring elements of nature into therapy

Imaginative Play

Imaginative play (or pretend play) is a specific type of play that involves a lot of underlying skills, and develops in complexity as children mature.

We love to use this area of strength as a vehicle to work on other skills that are more challenging.

We break the skills down, connect with the children at their level of comfort and build from there. Our therapists are all trained in Learn To Play approach and use this as a guide to build skills such as:

  • NObject substitution
  • NPlay scripts
  • NDoll or teddy play
  • NSequence of play actions
  • NSocial interactions
  • NRole play

Messy Play

From finger painting to sensory bins, we embrace the mess to stimulate all of your child’s senses.

What looks like a lot of mess, fun and laughter has an underlying aim of promoting development and bringing organisation to the sensory systems.

Children learn through tactile experiences in a safe and supportive environment, where messy play is celebrated as a pathway to growth and self-expression.

Sandplay & Symbol Work

Sandplay is an expressive counselling approach that has been around for well over 50 years and uses a sandtray, reminiscent of earlier experiences with sand in nature, at the beach or in childhood sandpits.

The sand tray allows us to create a world using symbols. This is a non-threatening style of therapy that doesn’t rely on talking. The child or adolescent is able to process their own experiences, memories, struggles and even unconscious roadblocks at their own pace.

Join us in creating a therapeutic space where the language of symbols unlocks new avenues for understanding, growth and healing.

Sensory Gym

One of the most popular places in our clinic with our youngest clients right up to our older adolescents – the “Red Room”.

Our sensory gym incorporates equipment that is designed to stimulate the sensory systems, most importantly the vestibular system (movement & balance system) and proprioceptive system (joint position and awareness, deeper touch).

Using our swings, scooter board ramp, lycra mattresses and obstacle course materials is so much fun that clients don’t even realise they are doing therapy.
