One of the most popular places in our clinic with our youngest clients right up to our older adolescents – the “Red Room”.
Our sensory gym incorporates equipment that is designed to stimulate the sensory systems, most importantly the vestibular system (movement & balance system) and proprioceptive system (joint position and awareness, deeper touch).
Using our swings, scooter board ramp, lycra mattresses and obstacle course materials is so much fun that clients don’t even realise they are doing therapy.
One child commented to his OT recently “what if I tell on you, that you don’t work, but you just play all day, will you get in trouble?”. Our greatest challenge with this room is that people don’t want to leave it. Which is fine for us because we know we’re working on things with them:
- Sensory Diet activities: providing a lot of sensory input to assist with regulation and focus.
- Motor skills: this place is definitely a core work out… and will challenge balance & strength too.
- Multidimensional movement in all different planes at all different speeds to stimulate the vestibular system and promote sensory organisation.
